Cooksport have been using roll cages for many years. We have raced cars with then, fitted them to our own vehicles, supplied then and installed them for our customers.
When meeting with Safety Devices, it was clear that the benefits of their products all stemmed from safety by quality. Traceability of production, materials, supply, right back not only through their business, but right back to the raw material supply.
For the trackday enthusiast, Safety Devices has an extensive range of rear protection systems, and systems that have been designed with the original manufacturer safety systems in place.
For those involved in Motorsport, MSUK and FIA compliant cages are also available too, With many championships mandating Safety Devices cages or naming them specifically in their regulations.
Do I need a roll cage?
For the car enthusiast modifying their vehicle for enhanced performance, safety should always be a consideration. In the event of a roll over situation, any assistance you can give to the shell of the vehicle is going to decrease your chance of injury.
What kind of roll cage do I need?
When selecting a roll cage, you must establish where the vehicle will spend the majority of it’s time. Road or track? Also do you want to add welded components into the car which will permanently be fixed to the car. You must also be clear on any motorsport regulations that may apply if you are entering a competition, series, or championship.
Do I need a full or rear roll cage?
For cars that see the road it should be considered that adding in a full roll cage, can infact create a hazard. If you are not wearing a helmet, you are exposing your head to the bars and you may have to remove safety features like side airbags. This is where a rear cage is recommended. Offering roll over protection while staying behind the driver, meaning arms and legs are very unlikely to come into contact with the roll cage. They are also far more convenient for occupants to enter and exit the vehicle. and are often designed to be non invasive to interior parts This can still be something for the dedicated track car, but then you can also consider the full roll cage.
For dedicated track cars or competition race cars a full roll cage is recommended. The occupants will always have a helmet and often interiors will be completely stripped, OE restraint systems removed etc.
Do I need MSUK or FIA approval?
No your roll cage does not require these unless the regulations of the event you are attending requires them such as a motorsport event or race. Often there are perfectly safe roll cages that were previously compliant but rule updates render them no longer usable for racing, date changes, or simply that were designed for trackways in mind that require no motorsport regulation.
Should I Weld in or bolt in a roll cage?
A bolt in cage with load spreader plates can be the least invasive way to install a roll cage to your car. This involves drilling and bolting in support plates and the cage simply fits to these through the body of the car. Ideal for the driving enthusiast and occasional trackday car.
Whether rear or full roll cage a welded system is a permanent feature of the car. It involves strengthening plates to be welded to the body of the vehicle for a stronger load bearing fixing point making the roll cage part of the body of the car.
Do you need a roll cage for a trackday?
No, but for your safety and that of your passengers, it should be high on your priority list. it’s telling that there are very many race series around the world that have as the the roll cage. That is the first and most mandatory of regulations before then looking at improving the stopping capability and then onto the grip, before any power is added if at all.
This rule can be applied to the trackday too. Making your track car the safe place should be of the utmost importance.
What is a Clubsport roll cage?
A ClubSport roll cage is a rear roll cage. In some cases manufacturers will sell a car from new with a rear roll cage fitted for the trackday enthusiast. these are often referred to as club sport spec. Examples are the Renault Megane R26R, Renault Megane Trophy R, Porsche GT3 RS and BMW M4 GTS that came with a factory fitted rear roll cage.
Is my car fast enough to need a roll cage?
How fast your vehicle is does not dictate the roll cage you need to have. It’s what you are doing with the car that matters.
Cooksport have prepared cars for (and raced in) the C1 Racing Club endurance events, 12 and 24hour races. The car is a Citroen C1, has a 998cc, 67hp engine. The cars also have a full Multipoint Safety Devices Roll cage.
Can I install a roll cage myself?
Yes. While it is always recommended that a roll cage is installed by a professional, bolt in rear cages using spreader plates can be self installed. It is recommended that professionals only fit weld in cages. The vehicle should be correctly prepared prior to install and specialist tooling and training for welding is required.
What is a harness bar?
When installing multipoint harness, he shoulder straps can be fitted to the horizontal bar that features in some roll cage designs. If you are looking to fit harnesses in this way, please check that the roll cage you are selecting has this feature.
Should I select single or cross bars on my roll cage?
When looking at single bars or X cross braces you should firstly consult any regulations that you have available. Does the competition you are entering require one or the other specification? If either are suitable you are mot likely then looking at a weight vs strength factor. All safety Devices roll cages are designed to withstand impact and protect the driver. By adding more bars and more strength to the roll cage you are also adding weight. There will come a point where this additional weight will compromise the performance for the vehicle, as such a more simple single bar approach to the cage may be favoured over the cross bars.
